Most nursery apprenticeships take between roughly one and two years, depending on the level, contracted hours, prior experience and the programme agreed by the employer and training provider.
Typical times by level
Level 2 Early Years Practitioner: often planned over around 12 to 15 months before assessment.
Level 3 Early Years Educator: commonly around 18 months before end-point assessment.
Level 5 Early Years Lead Practitioner: commonly around 24 months before the assessment period.
These are guides rather than promises. The current standard, provider curriculum and individual training plan determine the real duration.
What changes the timescale?
- How many hours you work each week
- Relevant prior qualifications and experience
- The amount of new learning required
- English and maths requirements where applicable
- Periods of absence or changes in employment
- Readiness for end-point assessment
Can it be shortened?
A provider must assess prior learning and avoid charging for content you already know. However, an apprenticeship must still contain enough substantial new learning and meet the minimum duration in the funding rules.
What happens at the end?
After the practical training period, the employer and provider confirm that you are ready for independent end-point assessment. Completion is not automatic simply because the planned training months have passed.
